But every time you open the discussion, meetings run longer, decisions get diluted, and you end up deciding alone. Collaborative leadership promises the best of both worlds. You still need to know what it really involves.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_text_1 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\" id=\"sommaire-1\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h2>What collaborative leadership is, and what it isn't<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_text_2 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p>Collaborative leadership means involving the team in the thinking and decisions that affect it, to reach better solutions and stronger commitment to carrying them out. The manager acts as a facilitator: setting the frame, drawing out different viewpoints and making sure a decision is actually made.<\/p>\n<p>It is not:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>deciding everything together.<\/strong> Some decisions belong to the manager, and that's fine;<\/li>\n<li><strong>seeking consensus at all costs.<\/strong> A team can debate, then commit to a decision that isn't unanimous;<\/li>\n<li><strong>giving up your role.<\/strong> Involving the team doesn't mean handing over responsibility for the result.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_text_3 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\" id=\"sommaire-1\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h2>Choosing the right level of involvement<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_text_4 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p>Most difficulties come from a lack of clarity: the team thinks it is deciding, while the manager only wanted to hear its views. Announce the level of involvement clearly before each topic:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>I inform.<\/strong> The decision is made, I explain why. Useful when there is urgency or an external constraint.<\/li>\n<li><strong>I consult.<\/strong> I gather your views, then I decide. The most common case.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We decide together.<\/strong> We look for a shared decision, with a clear rule if we can't reach one.<\/li>\n<li><strong>I delegate.<\/strong> You decide within a defined frame: objective, budget, deadline.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Simply saying \"on this topic, I'm consulting you, but I'll make the call\" avoids a great deal of frustration.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_text_5 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\" id=\"sommaire-1\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h2>The behaviors that make the difference<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_text_6 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><ul>\n<li><strong>Set the frame before opening the debate<\/strong>: the objective, the constraints, what is not negotiable.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get everyone to speak<\/strong>, starting with the quieter people, so that the first speakers don't steer the whole group.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Welcome disagreement<\/strong> as useful information, not as opposition.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Close explicitly<\/strong>: what has been decided, who does what, by when.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Explain what you took from the views expressed<\/strong>, including when you don't follow them. The Everything DiSC\u00ae model helps anticipate these differences. Someone who tends towards the D style may find consultation too slow. Someone with an i style enjoys the exchange but may lose sight of the decision. Someone with an S style participates willingly but hesitates to voice disagreement. Someone with a C style wants solid information before taking a position.<\/p>\n<p>A collaborative manager adapts their facilitation: setting time limits for some, explicitly inviting others to speak, and sharing information in advance with those who need it.
